Can you describe the musical parameters of Latin Jazz?
Please describe the melody, harmony and rhythm.
melody – generally, short phrases, a good mix and combination of staccato and legato in typical.
harmony – long notes around the sections of the band who don’t have the tune.
rhythm – occasionally walking bassline, sometimes just a smoothed over funk rhythm played on bass and rhythm guitar. Oh yeah, and when i say bass I mean either a guitar or a double bass (string bass)
Drums – steady quavers (8th noted) on the hi hat with alteration and rimshots in typical latin, drum solos feature toms with the hi hate still hitting crotchets.
Added percussion includes bongos / sort of hand beaten drums – not to be confused with african style drums.
